For the next generation, NVIDIA said in March 2026 that Vera Rubin NVL72 is in full production and on track to ship in the second half of 2026. StorageReview reported on 25 September 2026 that Supermicro is now shipping Vera Rubin NVL72 racks with its direct liquid cooling stack and 1.8 MW in-row CDUs. A rack power figure for Vera Rubin NVL72 is not yet published by NVIDIA on the pages cited here, so the power and cooling numbers for your exact configuration belong in the vendor’s site planning document at order time.

Air vs Liquid Cooling GPU Racks: How Each Tier Removes Heat

The three tiers differ in where the heat meets water. Air carries it to a room or row unit, a rear door catches it at the back of the rack, and direct-to-chip cooling takes most of it straight off the processor through a cold plate.

Perimeter and contained air

In perimeter cooling, CRAHs or fan wall units supply cold air, and hot or cold aisle containment manages the airflow. Uptime notes that at rack loads above the 20 kW to 25 kW range these systems may struggle to deliver enough airflow, leading to hot spots, throttling or equipment failures, especially at high utilisation or during maintenance. The upside is breadth: air cooling works with almost all IT hardware.

Rear-door heat exchangers

A rear-door heat exchanger (RDHx) is a door 10 cm to 30 cm deep fixed to the back of the rack that removes heat from the server exhaust air. Uptime classes it as close-coupled air cooling: the servers are still air-cooled, but the doors connect by piping to a secondary chilled water loop, sometimes through a CDU. Manufacturer ratings set the ceiling per product; Motivair, for example, rates its ChilledDoor active rear door heat exchanger at up to 75 kW per rack. Uptime describes close-coupled systems as a relatively easy way to add higher rack power in a few rows of a perimeter-cooled hall.

Direct-to-chip cold plates

Direct-to-chip, or direct liquid cooling (DLC), circulates coolant to cold plates on the GPUs and CPUs. CDUs pump that coolant and control its flow, pressure and temperature, and liquid-to-liquid CDUs pass the heat to the facility cooling system, with each CDU or pair of CDUs serving several racks. Uptime adds that cold plate systems still depend on air for 5 to 30 percent of the heat, sometimes up to 50 percent. In its example, a 130 kW GPU rack with 70 percent of heat on cold plates leaves 39 kW for air, which requires rear doors. For the Blackwell NVL72, Uptime reports cold plates handling around 100 kW at full load while air exhaust exceeds 25 kW.

Figure 2. The direct-to-chip heat path: the facility water loop feeds a CDU, the CDU drives the technology cooling loop to the cold plates, and residual heat to air leaves through a rear-door heat exchanger or room air. Who owns each hand-off in the contract?

In this post, the technology cooling loop means the circuit from the CDU to the cold plates in the rack; Uptime describes this piping as tertiary cooling rings to IT cold plates. Immersion is a fourth option in which servers sit in dielectric fluid. RackBank’s cooling portfolio includes direct-to-chip liquid cooling and our patented Varuna immersion cooling; our post on Varuna and water-conscious AI infrastructure covers how immersion works, so it is not repeated here.

Matching Cooling to Your Deployment, and Where Each Option Stops

Four common deployments show how the bands translate into a hall choice.

Smaller models on lower-powered GPUs: Uptime notes that lower-powered GPUs or alternative accelerators can bring rack power below 20 kW, manageable for a broad range of facilities with trivial or no upgrades. Perimeter air fits here.

Mid-density training in a mixed hall: close-coupled cooling, in-row or rear door, adds higher rack power to a few rows of a perimeter-cooled hall, within the ceiling of the specific door or unit.

64-GPU liquid-cooled racks at 80 kW to 90 kW: direct-to-chip with air or rear doors for the residual heat. Uptime estimates such a cluster will likely need 50 percent more racks to match the training performance of an NVL72-based one.

Rack-scale NVL72 systems: liquid cooling, and a floor rated for 1.4 metric tons (Blackwell NVL72, per Uptime) or roughly 4,000 lbs (Vera Rubin NVL72, per NVIDIA).

Each option has limits. Uptime cautions that liquid cooling can limit IT hardware options: support for cold plates or immersion must be confirmed for each hardware type, which can be harder for smaller colocation or mixed-use facilities. Cold plates do not remove the need for air, so a liquid-cooled rack still needs residual air capacity. For rear doors, is water piped to every door, and what is the rated kW of the product installed? Uptime’s 2026 survey also finds more than half of respondents report difficulty finding qualified candidates. Who operates the liquid loops on every shift?

If power limits, thermal limits and slow expansions are already showing up together in your current hall, our post on signs your AI infrastructure has outgrown traditional colocation walks through that pattern.

Criterion

Why it matters

What to verify

Rack power band

Sets the cooling tier: air, close-coupled or liquid

Design kW per rack for the hall and for your rack

Residual heat to air

Cold plates leave 5 to 30 percent, sometimes more, to air

Air or rear-door capacity per rack after cold plates

CDU capacity and redundancy

CDUs serve several racks and carry the liquid load

kW per CDU, racks per CDU, N+1, UPS feed

Coolant temperature

Current rack designs specify warm-water inlet limits

Supply temperature at the rack and the ASHRAE class

Floor loading

Rack-scale systems weigh over a metric ton

Rating per square metre and per point, delivery route

Hardware support

Liquid support must be confirmed per hardware type

Compatibility of your servers with the hall’s loop

Demarcation

DLC blurs provider and tenant responsibilities

Ownership drawing for every loop, manifold and hose

FAQ

Can an 8-GPU server rack stay on air cooling in colocation?
It depends on the rack total, not the server count. Uptime notes that vendor power management can cap a rack to fit a single circuit, for example 22 kW with 400 V/32 A power delivery, throttling chips if needed. Uptime’s range for optimised perimeter air, 20 kW to 25 kW per rack, is the figure to compare a capped rack against.

Is a rear-door heat exchanger a form of liquid cooling?
Only at the door. The servers stay air-cooled and the door’s coil uses water to cool the exhaust air, which is why Uptime groups it with close-coupled air cooling. Uptime’s 130 kW rack example pairs the two, with rear doors handling the heat that cold plates leave behind.

How much air cooling does a direct-to-chip rack still need?
Uptime’s worked example: a 70 kW rack with 70 percent of heat on cold plates still needs 21 kW of perimeter air cooling. Extending cold plates to memory and storage can push more than 90 percent of heat into liquid and reduce or remove server fans.

Choosing Air, Rear-Door or Direct-to-Chip for Your GPU Order

The cooling choice follows the rack. Uptime places racks up to about 20 to 25 kW within optimised perimeter air and close-coupled cooling, including rear doors, at up to about 50 kW; above that, liquid cooling is typically used, and as rack power approaches 150 kW or more, total or close to total liquid cooling is required. Which band does your rack sit in today, and which will it sit in by the end of the contract term? The evidence list above is a way to test a hall’s liquid-cooling readiness.

NEXT STEP
RackBank runs direct-to-chip liquid cooling and our patented Varuna immersion cooling.
